Accoya Posts Low Maintenance
Accoya® range of dimensionally stable porch posts.
Accoya® wood is produced from sustainably sourced, fast growing wood and manufactured using Accsys’ proprietary patented modification process from surface to core which means:
- Stability: Accoya wood has improved dimensional stability, which means it is less likely to warp, twist, or shrink in response to changes in temperature and humidity. This makes it ideal for use in applications where stability is important, such as in Barge boards, fascia, finials, posts, bollards, windows and doors.
- Durability: Accoya wood is highly resistant to decay, insect damage, and rot. This makes it an ideal choice for outdoor use, such as in decking, Posts, cladding, and window frames.
- BRE have stated that Accoya has Class 1 (BS EN 335) durability- The most durable wood possible. This makes it more durable than Teak!- Class 1 (BS EN 350) species can achieve a 60 year service life in ground contact or in contact with fresh water.
- Guaranteed/warranted against fungal decay for at least 50 years above ground and 25 years in ground.
- Sustainability: Accoya wood is made from sustainably grown and harvested softwood, and the acetylation process used to treat the wood is non-toxic and environmentally friendly. This makes it a more sustainable choice compared to other types of wood that may be treated with chemicals that are harmful to the environment.
- Low maintenance: Accoya wood requires very little maintenance compared to other types of wood. It does not require regular painting or staining to maintain its appearance, and its high resistance to decay and insect damage means it is less likely to require repairs or replacement over time.
- Meets NHBC Standards 2024 in relation to coated and uncoated porch posts/ canopy structures and decking/external stairs that are more than 600mm and less than 2.4m requirements (correct at the time of writing).
The result; One of the most advanced wood products on the market today, a durable, dimensionally stable, reliable, and beautiful solid wood with the performance characteristics of the most durable tropical hardwoods, but offering industry-leading environmental credentials. A new world of sustainable and low maintenance posts, finials and barge boards is available using Accoya® wood.
Is Accoya Structural?
- Accoya wood A1 quality is classified as C22 timber. Accoya wood A2 quality is classified as C16
- The Accoya acetylation process improves hardness and compression strength significantly. Accoya is approved for a general building approval by the German Institute for Building Technology (DIBt) for load bearing structural applications.
- This DIBt approval qualifies the strength class of A1 and A2 solid Accoya timber based on the European strength class system of C classes (EN338). Accoya A1 quality is classified as C22 strength grade and Accoya A2 quality is classified as C16. The approval applies to Accoya wood in the widths 100 mm to 250 mm with a thickness of 25mm to 100mm, and can be used both flat and upright use. The standard wood design safety factors (kdef, kmod) as given in EN 1995-1 were determined in the DIBt test program to be appropriate and may be used. Accoya wood may be fastened to a timber sub-frame with nails, clamps, wood screws, dowels and bolts. For non pre-drilled holes, the minimum spacing distance and edge/end clearance (EN 1995-1-1, table 8.2) should be in line with wood with a density between 420 and 500 kg/m³.
